Do you believe that Antonio's life as a priest was chosen for him just because he is a child? Do you think that most parents decide their children's life instead of the child?
Ajeet Baath 5th Pd. Pre-planned futures are very common among families. Parents that have a certain occupation have the desire for their children to continue in their footsteps. When Antonio was born, he chose the “pen and paper” as his path in life, leading everyone to believe that he chose to be a scholar (Anaya 54). Antonio’s father retorts that “a man cannot struggle against his own fate” (Anaya 54). This shows that although Antonio is expected to be a priest, it is up to him what he will ultimately become.
I believe that he can pick whatever job he dreams of doing but he might want to please his mom by being a priest. I'm sure his mom has some say over what he does though. I don't believe it was chosen because he was a kid i think it was because his family is religious and thats what they see him doing. I'm sure its a common dream of all of the moms to have their boys succeed.
Well to me yeah pre-planned futures are common in other countries, but also in the U.S. kids are pressured into a lifestyle and job they may not want. Though it that may be done one's path is not written on "pen and paper"(Anaya 54). As Andrew say that for them they "can't become farmers or priests" because they don't want to.(Anaya 74) Some do but mainly they just want their child to succeed in life and have their own secret wishes.
I don't necessarily believe that most children's parents give them certain labels just because they are children. Parents just have high expectations wanting the best for their child. In this case Antonio knows little about his religion so by his mother suggesting that he should "be a man of the people, perhaps a priest" confuses the him, putting him under pressure (Anya 9). This label of being a priest also allows Antonio to seek answers about his religion, which is a great thing. Despite what we see in this novel parents probably have lesser of an influence on children's lives than we think, they can only guide them in the right direction. Children are going to do what they want to do in most cases, as they grow older, whether it's for better or for worse.
Seth J. ******** In other countries and in medieval times people's jobs were pre-determined by their parents and sometimes heritage. In Bless me, Ultima Antonio's future is pressured by his mother mostly who is over joyed that " a man of learning was once again delievered to the lunas", but his father seems to keep an open mind about what his future would be. (Anaya,67) I think it truely depends where and when that child is and what the parents believe would be right for the child.
I do believe that parents choose kids jobs, because they want their kids to be successful. It might not be what the kid wants, because the parents choose it. The kid would also like to get this job just to make their parents proud. "A priest, I thought, that was her dream" (Anaya 9). This is showing that Ultima wants him to becomea priest. They are trying to plan his future for him, and he is wanting to be a priest to make them happy.
I think that it could be common if his parents choose his path for him. His mother really wants him to be a priest and is very persistent about it. Antonio is only concerned about her "man of learning" following her own footsteps, instead of actually asking what Antonio wants (Anaya 67). I think that not a lot of parents choose their child's life for them, but if they do they probably only choose then because they want for their child what they couldn't have.
I believe Antonio's mother " want [him] to become a [...] priest is because they are religious and because she is a luna so she want him to "become one of" them ( Anaya 144). I do believe that most parents plan and set high goals for a child, but as far as deciding, I don't believe they actually do that. Children decide their own future as they grow up. - Justin Johnson 5th period
I believe that parents live there dreams through there children so yes Antonio's life as a priest was chosen because he was a child. Parents do chose the life for there children instead of the child because they wont there child to do much better then how they did themselves. -Dwanna
Riquerra Broadnax Period 5 Yes, I do believe that Antonios paresnt chose his path for him because hes just a child, "This one will be a luna", and also because they want to do what they think is best for him, (Anayas 5). I also agree that most parents decide there childrens future rather than the child choosing his or hers own futer, "You will be a priest" but i think that there only doing that so they can ensure that their child has a bright futer, (Anayas 7).
I believe that children when they are young do things to please their parents. Antonio thinks he must "fulfill his mothers dreams" instead of following his own (Anaya 6). When he "thought of leaving [his] mother," he was scared (Anaya 7). children depend on their parents for support because they do not know better than to look up to them. Although parents do this with the best intention of their child in mind, they still control what their kid will be when it is ultimately their decision.
